When I first designed my Orange and White Paw Collar, Leash, and Bow Tie collection, it was with Knoxville in mind. This collection was created specifically for my Painted Tree location there and my rented space at The Market Grove. Inspired by Tennessee Volunteer game days, I wanted a line of coordinated collars, leashes, and bow ties that would let pets join their families in showing team spirit in a bold, stylish way.

Each piece in the collection collars, leashes, and bow ties features a crisp orange-and-white paw print design that instantly says “Volunteers.” The collars are durable yet comfortable, the leashes are built for game-day crowds and everyday walks alike, and the bow ties add that extra touch for photos, parties, and tailgates.

Since designing and having the manufacturer produce this line, a lot has changed. My Knoxville Painted Tree location has since closed, and The Market Grove space had to relocate to a new mall with no confirmed move-in date. By popular demand, I’m now offering tie-on options in three sizes for certain bandanas where I have enough fabric to make them. For years, I stayed away from tie-on styles—not because I didn’t love the look, but because making them to my standards is much more time-consuming. Many mass-produced tie-on bandanas cut corners with raw hem edges, but that has never aligned with my quality standards. At Top Rocks Paws, every edge is finished cleanly so the bandana looks and feels high-end, even if it takes me longer to make.

Licensed to Create: My Journey with United States Army Pet Products

2024 was a landmark year for Top Rocks Paws, and it came with an exciting opportunity: I became officially licensed to create and sell United States Army pet products. This milestone was more than just a business move—it was a challenge, an honor, and an adventure that pushed me to grow as a designer and entrepreneur.

The Beginning of the Journey

When I first considered applying for the license, I knew it would be no small task. The U.S. Army has a reputation for high standards, and rightfully so. Their licensing process ensures that all products bearing their name reflect the values and dignity of the Army itself. This wasn’t just about creating a pet product; it was about designing something that would resonate with the men, women, and families who serve our country.

The process of gaining approval took time, but when I received the green light, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. Now the real work would begin.

Designing for the Army Community

Creating pet products for the Army meant adhering to strict design standards. Every detail—from the placement of the Army logo to the colors and patterns used—needed to meet their guidelines. I wanted to create items that pet parents would be proud to use while honoring the Army’s legacy.

The learning curve was steep. Some designs I loved didn’t make the cut because they didn’t align perfectly with the Army’s requirements. Revisions became part of my daily routine. There were moments of frustration when I felt I was so close to perfection, only to need another round of adjustments.

But through it all, I learned. I learned how to balance creativity with compliance, how to refine my designs to meet high expectations, and how to view the design process through the lens of a larger purpose.

The Products: A Labor of Love

After months of work, I finally had a collection of Army pet products that met their standards and felt true to my brand. These items include over-the-collar ties with camouflage backgrounds, bold and durable designs that stand out, and other accessories that showcase Army pride while still being functional for pets.

It’s incredibly rewarding to see these products in the hands (and paws) of U.S. Army families. Knowing that I’ve created something that celebrates their service and brings joy to their furry family members makes all the challenges worth it.

Looking Back, Moving Forward

Reflecting on this journey, I can honestly say it has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my business. The challenges taught me patience, the revisions honed my skills, and the end result gave me a sense of pride and connection to the Army community.

Shadoe’s Snow Day Adventures

As winter settles in and the snow blankets the ground, there’s one family member who greets the cold weather with uncontainable joy—our beloved Shadoe. At 12 years young, he might have a touch of gray in his fur, but when snow falls, his spirit comes alive, making him seem like a playful pup again.

Watching Shadoe in the snow is pure magic. The moment the first flakes fall, his ears perk up, and he’s at the door, tail wagging with excitement. Once outside, he transforms. His energy is contagious as he bounds and bops through the snow, his black coat a stark contrast against the fluffy white. He moves with careful enthusiasm, always aware of his limits but unable to resist the call of winter. It’s as if the snow has a special way of making him feel young again.

Shadoe’s favorite thing seems to be zig-zagging through fresh snowdrifts, his nose buried in the frosty powder as he explores scents. Every bounce is a declaration of joy, his movements almost like a snow dance. His white-tipped toes, now dusted with snowflakes, add to the charm of the scene. There’s something so heartwarming about seeing an older dog rediscover the simple pleasures of life—it’s a reminder to us all to embrace the little things.

But as much as Shadoe loves his snowy escapades, he has his limits. After a few minutes of frolicking, his pace slows, and he starts heading toward the door with a look that says, “Time for warmth, please.” His aging body isn’t built for extended time in the cold anymore, and he knows it.

Back inside, Shadoe is quick to curl up in his favorite warm spot, his excitement giving way to contentment. A cozy blanket and a quick towel-off are all he needs to settle in and relax, his snow-day joy still shining in his eyes.

Shadoe’s love for the snow is more than just a seasonal quirk—it’s a beautiful reminder of his resilience and zest for life. Even as he grows older, he shows us that it’s never too late to embrace joy, whether it’s in the form of a snowy romp or a warm cuddle afterward. Watching him reminds us to cherish these fleeting moments, to laugh and play, and to find happiness in life’s simplest pleasures.

January 9th and the Christmas Tree Still Stands

Here we are, well into January, and my Christmas tree is still standing proudly in the corner of the living room. Normally, by now, the ornaments would be packed, the lights neatly coiled, and the tree tucked away until next December. But this year is different.

I’ve been procrastinating, and I know it. Taking the tree down feels like acknowledging the return to the “depressing norm” after the warmth and magic of the holidays. I’m not quite ready to let go of the cozy glow of the twinkling lights or the memories we made this Christmas season.

A Season That Feels More Precious

This year, I think my hesitation comes from something deeper. Shadoe, my beloved dog and loyal companion for over a decade, is getting older. He’s still spry and full of personality, but the gray creeping into his fur reminds me that time is passing.

Of course, Shadoe has no idea what Christmas is. To him, the tree might as well be just another thing in the house that smells interesting and gets in the way of his zoomies. But for me, this holiday felt more precious because I know every moment with him is a gift.

Holding Onto the Holiday Spirit

The tree, in a way, feels like a symbol of the love and joy that filled our home over the holidays. It’s not just about the decorations or the presents beneath it; it’s about the moments we shared—Shadoe snoozing by the tree while I wrapped gifts, or the way his eyes lit up when he got his new toy.

Packing it all away feels like closing a chapter, and I guess I’m not ready for that yet. The holidays are a time when life feels softer, slower, and more intentional, and I’ve found it hard to shift back into the fast-paced rhythm of the everyday grind.

So for now, the tree stays up. I’m giving myself permission to take my time, to hold onto the holiday spirit a little longer. After all, life moves fast enough without me rushing to erase the remnants of a season that brought so much joy.

And Shadoe? He’s content as ever, happy as long as there’s a comfy spot to nap and someone to scratch behind his ears. He’s my reminder to savor the present, no matter the season.

Happy New Year! I’m so excited to kick off 2025 with my very first blog post of the year. One of my big goals for this year is to keep up with adding fresh content to the blog and not let it fall to the wayside like I did in 2024. There’s so much to share, from behind-the-scenes looks at Top Rocks Paws to stories about Shadoe and Indy, and I want to make this a space you look forward to visiting.

To start the year strong, I have something very special and personal to share: Shadoe has been nominated for Pet of the Year! This is such an incredible honor, and winning this title would mean the world to us. The grand prize is $10,000, and that money could make a huge difference in paying off some of Shadoe's vet bills from 2023.

Last year, Shadoe gave us quite a scare with some health issues. He’s 12 now, and as much as I’ve tried to prepare for the costs that come with caring for an older dog, nothing really prepares you for the reality of it. Everyone talks about how expensive puppies are—all those initial vaccines, spay or neuter surgeries, and other startup costs. But there isn’t nearly as much conversation about the expenses that come with having a senior dog.

From regular checkups and diagnostic tests to medications and treatments to keep them comfortable, the bills pile up quickly. Add in the occasional emergency vet visit, and it can be overwhelming. But here’s the thing: I wouldn’t change a single decision I’ve made to care for Shadoe. He’s been my best friend, my model, and my inspiration for Top Rocks Paws. As his muzzle turns grayer and his pace slows down, I’m more determined than ever to give him the best golden years possible, no matter the cost.
